On 19 March 2025, ITAC published a notice in the Government Gazette (notice no. 3061 of 2025) informing stakeholders of its intention to initiate the process of reviewing the steel tariff structure.

Steel is an indispensable and versatile material in municipal bulk water infrastructure, where pipelines traverse many kilometres of remote and demanding terrain to meet the potable water needs of South African communities. During the Outward Trade and Investment Mission to Cabo Delgado & Maputo Provinces of Mozambique on Mozambique on 25 Nov – 01 Dec 2018, the Steel Tube Export Association of South Africa (STEASA) took part in the trade and investment mission to Mozambique arranged by the dtic and the office of the High Commission in Mozambique.

The Department of Trade and Industry (the dti) has committed to increasing the funding of the export councils in order to drive the transformation agenda in different sectors. The commitment emanated from the export councils meeting hosted by the dti’s Director-General, Mr Lionel October in Pretoria.

Anotable increase in welded small-bore tubes and seamless pipes from Asia is exacerbating the pressure which South Africa’s steel tube and pipes industry has been under during the past three years, says Association of Steel Tube and Pipe Manufacturers (ASTPM) executive director Keitumetse Moumakoe.

The Key Accounts Manager at Hall Longmore – a steel pipe manufacturing company based in Gauteng, Ms Mmatsheko Shai says she is optimistic that the company will export around 30 000 metric tons into the United States of America (USA) market by end of 2019, with the intention to grow the number in the next five years.
